La piazza de la Concorde è senz’altro uno dei luoghi più importanti della storia di Parigi. Thanks to a new project at the site, the old causeway used for parking and busses will eventually be replaced by a footbridge over the water. You can no longer drive or park anywhere near the monument. Instead, there is a massive parking lot quite a bit inland from the island. You park your car (pay) and then walk to an area where you catch a special bus (free) to the island. On the most crowded days, you might walk half a mile just to catch the bus!
You are not required to take the bus to or from the island, and are welcome to approach it on foot. The walk isn't strenuous and the views are just breathtaking as you approach the island.
Once you get to the island, there is only one way in and out of the walled city. The only public bathrooms (pay ~ 0.50) are located just inside the walls. Then, you must walk, climb stairs and navigate tiny alleys to see the city. It's not too strenuous, but if you're out of shape or have little ones in tow it can be a challenge. There are stunning views all around, little churches tucked away, and of course the Abbey at the top of the hill.
The visit to the Abbey is a must. Free tours in a variety of languages are included with your entry fee.
Because of the huge number of visitors, I recommend packing your food and either eating on the grounds of the Abbey (there is a nice garden with benches after you exit the gift shop) or sitting down on one of the many staircases of the city for your meal. Food is expensive, options are limited and the lines are long if you plan to eat in the city.
Plan ahead, wear your walking shoes, pack some food and enjoy a beautiful day or evening at Mont-Saint-Michel.
